Description: I remember climbing down from a
rather steep cliff overlooking the Pacific to get to the small pebbly beach, and then over
and around boulders and rocks to get to a good location to shoot the shoreline. This is
made much more difficult with a 4x5 view camera on its tripod slung over my shoulder.
Getting a good footing after I found a good composition was also difficult. But this image
makes it all worthwhile. I found this twisted ragged boulder among the others at the shore
and knew immediately that I wanted to photograph it. The real issue was to get a good
background for it, as the footing was treacherous, and the background was very busy. I
finally found the rocks in the distance to complement the shape of the foreground boulder.
I used a rather slow shutter speed to soften the water, as the image was busy enough with
the rocks. The contrast between the jagged rocks and the misty water contributes
to the mystery in this image that I felt was there when I took this
photograph.
