Description: I was exploring the forest
below Yosemite Falls when I came upon this bridge. Since it was December there wasn't much
water left in the stream coming from the falls. I was photographing the leaves in the
water below the bridge and had the 4x5 view camera set low to the ground. After I had
composed my image under the darkcloth I came up for air, and lo and behold I saw this deer
just standing on the bridge staring out to the falls. I quickly put the film in the
camera, and without time to make any light readings with my spotmeter, I used the setting
I had just used for the previous photograph. After I took the photograph the deer must
have been startled by my actions and started across the bridge and came directly at me. I
quickly, but quietly, took my camera on it's tripod and started backing up! I didn't want
to find out if he was just being friendly or wanted to taste the leather bellows on the
camera! This is the first 4x5 image I have ever taken of a deer, since it takes so long to
set up a 4x5 view camera, animals won't stay in place long enough to compose and take a
    picture of them. |
